The Intelligence Stack Enabling Microsoft’s Next-Gen AI Agents
In this post, we will explore the intelligence stack enabling Microsoft's next-gen AI agents.

The announcement of Copilot Cowork is an important step toward more collaborative AI inside Microsoft 365. As an EA, I think, the more meaningful development is the architecture that enables these next generation agents.

What I see is Microsoft is moving from app specific AI to a platform level intelligence model powered by three layers: • WorkIQ • Work Fabric • Foundry IQ Together, they shift Copilot from reacting to queries understanding organisational context, data relationships, and business processes. This makes agents more intelligent across workflows instead of staying confined to individual apps.

WorkIQ is the contextual & intelligent engine that gives agents meaningful organisational understanding. It provides: • A unified view of enterprise data across Microsoft 365, Dynamics, Power Platform, and connected systems • Insight into work patterns — collaboration behaviour, document relevance, timelines, decision flows • Contextual intelligence that helps agents interpret past meetings, project context, dependencies, and user habits WorkIQ elevates agents from isolated assistants to context aware collaborators.

Work Fabric ensures AI has secure & governed access to organisational data. It brings together: • Microsoft 365 and Dynamics content • Third party and line of business data • Connectors, APIs, and multi model capabilities It enforces permissions, compliance, data boundaries, and governance, which is critical for enterprise grade AI. This layer makes WorkIQ both operational and safe.

Foundry IQ enables organisations to build and run their own agents. It provides: • Tools for custom, domain specific agents • Secure integration with internal systems • Multi step automation and workflow orchestration • Control over model selection and agent behaviour This gives enterprises the ability to shape AI around their own processes and constraints.

Together, WorkIQ, Work Fabric, and Foundry IQ establish AI as an architectural capability, not an add on. This stack enables: • Context aware, role relevant agents • Cross workflow reasoning and execution • Secure, governed data intelligence • Scalable and consistent automation • A unified intelligence layer across the organisation
Enterprise Transformation
Enterprises must stop treating AI as isolated tools and start treating it as a core architectural foundation. Those who move early will lead the next era of intelligent workflows
